Sodium Isobutyl Xanthate (SIBX)

One of the most widely used flotation collectors globally, valued for its balance of selectivity and recovery in copper, cobalt and gold circuits.

What it is

Chemical properties

SIBX is the sodium salt of isobutyl xanthic acid, produced by reacting isobutyl alcohol, carbon disulphide and sodium hydroxide. It is a medium-chain xanthate offering good selectivity against gangue minerals.

Application

How it’s used

A workhorse collector across the Central African Copperbelt for copper and copper-cobalt sulphide flotation, and widely used in gold flotation ahead of cyanidation.

Used with / for
  • Copper sulphides
  • Cobalt-bearing sulphides (carrollite)
  • Gold-bearing pyrite/pyrrhotite
Storage & handling

Keep sealed and dry; sensitive to moisture and prolonged heat exposure which accelerate decomposition.
